Fort Ticonderoga Virtual Teacher Institute: “No Quarter! The 1775 Capture of Fort Ticonderoga”

Join us for this free virtual institute as we prepare for the upcoming 250th anniversary of America’s First Victory on May 10, 1775. The historic capture of Fort Ticonderoga in the early hours of May 10th marked the first offensive action taken by the colonies at the beginning of the American Revolution.

10:00-10:05am Introductions

10:05-10:50am “The Capture of Fort Ticonderoga, May 10, 1775”—Fort Ticonderoga’s Curator, Dr. Matthew Keagle, details the events leading up to Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold capturing the fort just three weeks after the battles at Lexington and Concord.

11:00am-12:00pm “Benedict Arnold and the Early Days of the American Revolution”— Dr. Stephen Brumwell, the British author of Turncoat: Benedict Arnold and the Crisis of American Liberty, joins us from The Netherlands to discuss Arnold’s pre-revolutionary history, as well as he role in the capture of Ticonderoga and early military actions on the Northern Frontier of the War for American Independence.

12:00-12:30pm—Lunch Break

12:30-1:15pm “Analyzing Alonzo Chapell’s Depiction of the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga”—Dr. Matthew Keagle highlights this painting in the Fort Ticonderoga Collection. Learn about the career of artist Alonzo Chapell and learn about what he got right and wrong about the May 10, 1775, capture of Fort Ticonderoga.

1:15-2:00pm “Exploring the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga through Objects and Documents”—Dr. Kristi Fragnoli from Siena College, Tim Potts from SUNY New Paltz and Monticello Central School District, and Rich Strum, Fort Ticonderoga’s Director of Academic Programs, share strategies for using objects and documents related to the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in the classroom.
