Americana Corner grant allows Fort Ticonderoga to continue to tell signature America 250th REAL TIME REVOLUTION™ stories
Fort Ticonderoga is thrilled to announce a four-year expansion of our living history experience across our historic landscape through the Liberty Hill Encampment project funded by Americana Corner.
Thanks to the generous support of Americana Corner, Fort Ticonderoga will recreate the daily life for American soldiers as they encamped on Liberty Hill in 1776 & 1777. This project will recreate the simple wooden houses, called ‘huts,’ that American soldiers built in September 1776 as cold weather approached. This encampment represents Fort Ticonderoga’s latest understanding of the actual soldiers’ hut sites on Liberty Hill, based on archaeological and documentary evidence.
Visitors will be able to stroll through rows of soldiers’ huts, stepping inside the humble accommodations that more than 2,000 American soldiers occupied as they defended this historic high ground, in late 1776. The Liberty Hill encampment expands Fort Ticonderoga’s multi-year programmatic initiative REAL TIME REVOLUTION™, an innovative real-time experience bringing Ticonderoga’s history to life during America’s 250th celebration. REAL TIME REVOLUTION™ captures in real time, the events, personalities, and peoples that led to American independence from 1774 through 1777.
“Americans renamed the Heights of Carillon to the west of Fort Ticonderoga ‘Liberty Hill’ in July 1776,” said Stuart Lilie, Fort Ticonderoga Vice President of Public History. “Americans dug in their defense of this new nation upon this hill in the legendary July 8, 1758 battle that happened on the same ground. After American soldiers fortified this hill—literally finding remains from the 1758 Battle of Carillon—they set about replacing their linen tents with wooden houses to stay warm while they awaited British attack. We not only invite visitors into these soldiers’ huts, but we also invite them into the lived experience of the soldiers who defended this hill.”

As Fort Ticonderoga recreates the dramatic stories of 1776 & 1777 in REAL TIME REVOLUTION™ the new Liberty Hill Encampment will transport visitors to the real time and place that they occurred, through 2027 and beyond.
